View planning applications

An 'advertised' planning application is a planning permit submitted to us that does not yet have approval. It is on exhibition for public viewing. Comments or objections can be submitted to us for consideration.

Apply for a building permit

This information is only relevant if you have chosen the City to act as your building surveyor. If you have chosen a Private Building Surveyor you must speak with them.  

View planning scheme amendments

Sometimes the Greater Geelong planning scheme needs to be changed to reflect new circumstances or achieve new planning objectives. Changes to the scheme are known as amendments and can include changes to zones, overlays and policies.

You may require information from Council to assist with building permit applications, the sale and purchase of property or issuing protection works notices.

If you plan to build or replace a fence or retaining wall, there are several things you will need to consider.

Statutory Planning

Statutory planning controls the use and development of land. Planning permits are required for some types of development, land use and subdivision, depending on the planning controls that apply.
You may need A Report and Consent if your building project does not meet a requirement of the Building Regulations.

Building and renovating

Building regulations in Victoria apply to most buildings and building work on private land.

Strategic planning looks ahead to how Geelong will grow and what it needs to stay a great place to live, including where homes, parks and roads should go. It is implemented through Planning Scheme Amendments.
