Melbourne Design Week in Geelong 14-24 March 2019

Monday, 11 February 2019

Melbourne Design Week is Australia’s leading annual international design event.

For the first time, as Australia’s first and only UNESCO designated City of Design, Geelong will play host to a satellite program. The program will feature more than 20 events and includes keynote speakers, tours and exhibitions covering a broad range of topics including sustainability, urban design, innovation, access and inclusion.

Linking creativity with business and community, Design Week provides a platform for the Australian design industry to express, question, propose and test ideas. This year’s program of events will respond to the theme Design Experiments and will address a range of topics, ideas and concerns related to the central question ‘How can design shape the future?’

Some of the highlights of the Geelong program include:
• The Echo of Country – Making Sense of Place and Cultural Connection to Community – keynote address by leading Indigenous architect and educator Jefa Greenaway – a partnership event with the City and Geelong Regional Library Corporation.
• Places for People and Mixed Mobility – presented by the City of Greater Geelong.
• The Role of Design Champions in the Revitalisation of Cities – presented by the Office of the Victorian Government Architect.
• Dale Hardiman PRO-AM “Professionally Amateur” – keynote address by renowned designer and owner of Dowel Jones, Geelong – presented by Geelong Gallery.
• Gendered Design – keynote presentation by Monash University’s XYX Lab’s Associate Professor Nicole Kalms – presented by Creative Geelong Inc.
• Vital signs: Smart City Living City– looking at alternative, possible, and plausible design futures for Geelong – presented by Deakin University, the City, Geelong Gallery and Geelong Regional Library Corporation.
