Melbourne Boomers return to Geelong

Friday, 3 August 2018

Geelong will host yet another top level sporting contest, when the WNBL’s Melbourne Boomers come to town on Friday 19 October.

It will be the third straight year the Boomers have played at The Arena, a venue that’s become the team’s second home.

Deputy Mayor Peter Murrihy and junior Geelong Supercats players joined Boomers stars Jenna O’Hea and Ezi Magbegor for the announcement.

“Basketball is one of the most popular sports in Geelong, with junior participation numbers soaring,” Cr Murrihy said.

“This will be another exciting chance for our budding stars to get an up-close look at the game’s best, and see where hard work could take them.”

O’Hea, the Boomers’ captain and an Australian Opals representative, said the team was looking forward to returning.

“The support for the Boomers in Geelong over the last two years has been terrific,” she said.

“Being from regional Victoria myself, I know the value of taking elite sport and top athletes into areas where we can create a connection with the community to showcase the very best that Australian sport can offer.”

O’Hea said local juniors would have the opportunity to meet Boomers players after the match.

The team’s presence in Geelong has been assisted by state government funding.

It’s the latest in a long list of major sporting events in the region this year, following the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (cycling), the Vic Open (golf), Melbourne Victory (soccer) and Renegades (cricket) matches, and the Australian Table Tennis Open.

This summer will also see an All-Korean team based in Geelong playing in the Australian Baseball League.

“Our city is a proven host destination for top level sport, and I’m sure local fans will pack The Arena, creating a great atmosphere for both teams,” Cr Murrihy said.

Tickets will go on sale soon.
