Wednesday, 11 July 2018
At the official launch of AirAsia into Avalon Airport, the low-cost carrier announced that flights from Avalon to Malaysia will begin on 5 December 2018, for as low as $99 one way.
Mayor Bruce Harwood attended the launch alongside CEO of Avalon Airport, Justin Giddings and CEO of AirAsia X, Benyamin Ismail.
Also in attendance were media outlets from across Australia, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Korea and Taiwan.
A taste of Geelong was prepared for the official launch, featuring our region’s best food and wine, and a short video showcased the fantastic attractions and scenery on offer throughout Geelong and the Bellarine.
From December, two flights will depart Avalon Airport daily to Malaysia, one mid-morning and one in the evening.
Avalon Airport's transition to the nation's first dedicated low cost
international airport will benefit Greater Geelong and residents of Melbourne's western suburbs.
With great value fares, no tolls, affordable parking and an easy
arrival and departure experience, Avalon Airport is sure to attract many
travellers as a preferred point of departure.
The new international terminal is well underway and will include Duty Free shopping and food and beverage options.
Skybus will continue to deliver passengers from Melbourne, Werribee and Geelong to the airport.
The first AirAsia X flight will arrive at Avalon Airport on the morning of 5 December.
It is anticipated the long-term impact of AirAsia’s move to Geelong will be immensely positive for the local community.
It will create increased employment opportunities and freight movement, and open up Geelong and the Great Ocean Road to more international visitors.
Mayor Bruce Harwood:
It was an honour to represent the Geelong region at the official launch of AirAsia into Avalon Airport.
We’ve had a great opportunity to promote the best of our region to
plenty of international media, and with those fantastic airfares on offer, we’re expecting a spike in visitor numbers from Southeast Asia over summer.
We’re looking forward to welcoming Southeast Asia to the Geelong region, and pass our congratulations to Justin Giddings, CEO Avalon Airport and Benyamin Ismail, CEO AirAsia X on this much anticipated opening.
